Privacy Policy

This policy explains what data audiclip collects, why we collect it, and what we do with it. We try to keep it straightforward.

What we collect

Account information

When you sign up, we collect your email address and display name. If you sign in via a third-party provider (e.g., Google), we receive basic profile information from that provider.

Connected services

When you connect Pocket, Instapaper, Twitter/X, or other content sources, we store OAuth tokens that allow us to access your saved content on those platforms. We access:

• Your saved/bookmarked articles, including titles, URLs, and metadata.
• We do not access your private messages, contacts, or other unrelated data on those platforms.

Content you submit

URLs, article text, and metadata from your connected sources or direct submissions. This content is processed through our AI pipeline to generate podcast episodes.

Browser extension

The audiclip extension for Chrome reads a page only when you click its toolbar button or press its keyboard shortcut. It then reads the page you are on: its address, its title, and the readable text of the article. It sends these to audiclip to save the article to your queue. Saved articles are treated like any other content you submit.

• It reads the address of the page in each tab, on your computer, to mark its toolbar icon (see below). It does not read the content of other tabs, does not send or record the pages you visit, and runs nothing in a page until you click.
• The one exception is a setting you can turn on: “Show the player on pages that have an episode”. Chrome then asks you to give the extension access to all websites. With it, the extension draws its player on a page that has your own ready episode, using the list it keeps on your computer, and sends nothing when it does. The page’s own scripts can see that the player is there. It still reads a page’s text only when you click. If you close that player, the extension keeps a short code for the page (a hash, not its address) until you close the browser, so the player does not show there again. Turning the setting off gives the access back.
• It does not send pages that look private: sign-in, password reset and invitation pages, addresses on your local network, and links that carry access codes or tokens.
• It uses your audiclip sign-in from audiclip.com. It never sees your password.
• It keeps short-lived state, such as what its panel shows in each tab and a page whose save failed, in your browser’s session storage. The browser clears it when you close it.
• To mark pages on its toolbar icon, it keeps two lists on your computer: the addresses of the articles you saved, with the episode each one is in, and a short code for each article in a public episode. Each code is made from the article’s address by a one-way function (a hash). The public list does not say which station or episode covers an article. The extension downloads both lists from audiclip.com when the browser starts and about every six hours, and your list also after you click its button and when an audiclip.com page finishes loading. When a tab shows a page, the extension compares that page’s address with your list, and a code made the same way with the public list, on your computer. The address stays in your browser. When you click its button on a page that has the public mark, the extension sends that page’s address, without tracking parameters, to audiclip.com to ask which episode covers it. When it next checks your sign-in and finds you signed out, it deletes your list. Removing the extension deletes both lists.

Listening behavior

We track how you interact with episodes: play, pause, progress, and completion events. This helps us understand what content resonates and improve episode generation.

Device and usage data

Standard web analytics: IP address, browser type, device type, pages visited, and referring URLs. We use this to maintain and improve the service.

How we use your data

• Generate episodes: Your saved content is processed by our AI pipeline to create personalized podcast episodes.
• Personalize your station: Listening behavior and content preferences help us improve episode quality and relevance.
• Serve ads: We use aggregated and anonymized data to help advertisers reach relevant audiences. We do not sell your personal information to advertisers.
• Improve the service: Usage data helps us fix bugs, improve performance, and develop new features.
• Communicate with you: Service updates, security alerts, and (rarely) product announcements. You can unsubscribe from non-essential emails.

What we share

Public by default

Your station page and RSS feed are public. This means your station name, episode titles, and audio content are accessible to anyone. Don’t submit content you want to keep private.

Service providers

We use third-party services to operate audiclip (hosting, database, email, analytics, AI processing). These providers access your data only to perform services for us and are bound by their own privacy obligations.

When we cannot read an article’s text from what you sent, we send its address to a page-reading service (Jina Reader), which fetches the public page and returns its text.

Ad partners

We share aggregated, anonymized data with advertising partners (e.g., listener counts, content categories, engagement metrics). We do not share your email, name, or other personally identifiable information with advertisers.

Legal requirements

We may disclose your data if required by law, subpoena, or court order, or if we believe disclosure is necessary to protect our rights, your safety, or the safety of others.

Cookies and tracking

We use cookies and similar technologies for authentication, analytics, and basic service functionality. We may use third-party analytics tools (e.g., Vercel Analytics) that set their own cookies.

We do not currently use third-party advertising trackers on our website. If this changes, we will update this policy.

Your choices

• Disconnect services: You can disconnect Pocket, Instapaper, or other connected services at any time through your settings. We will stop accessing new content from disconnected services, but previously generated episodes remain.
• Delete your account: You can delete your account through your settings. We will delete your account data within 30 days. Some data may be retained in backups for up to 90 days. Generated episodes associated with your station will be removed.
• Email preferences: You can unsubscribe from non-essential emails at any time.

Data retention

We retain your account data for as long as your account is active. After account deletion, we delete your personal data within 30 days, with backup copies removed within 90 days.

We may retain anonymized, aggregated data indefinitely for analytics and service improvement.

Children

audiclip is not intended for children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If we learn we’ve collected such information, we will delete it promptly.

Security

We use industry-standard security measures to protect your data, including encryption in transit (TLS) and at rest. However, no system is perfectly secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.

International data transfers

audiclip uses service providers that may process data outside your country (e.g., cloud hosting in the United States). By using audiclip, you acknowledge this.

Changes to this policy

We may update this privacy policy from time to time. We’ll notify you of material changes via email or a notice on the service. Continued use after changes take effect constitutes acceptance.
